The Hopeful Romantic’s Guide to an Intimate Backyard Wedding

Backyard wedding in Hendersonville, Tennessee in August

Backyard Weddings are a simple choice for couples who don’t want a huge ceremony. They are a lot more intimate and casual, considering their setup. The perks that come with it is that it can be spontaneously planned because it’s so accessible. You can work around a schedule that suits you and the number of guests and take as much time as you want prepping. There are no pet or children restrictions and you call the shots. But just because it’s less formal doesn’t make it any less special. Here is a simple guide to make your backyard wedding feel all the more exciting.

A Guide to Great Backyard Weddings

Space is Everything

Make sure you have enough space to fit everyone. Also follow the social gathering guidelines of 2020 to base the number of guests you can cater to. If your backyard isn't enough for ten people, then you can’t push it.

Decorations should also be smartly planned. Since space is limited, opt for simple decor plans. Hanging fairy lights are a go-to for backyard weddings. For one, they look incredible and bring the intimate ambiance out better. Also, they can fill in the backyard without taking up space.

Be Prepared for Unforeseen Circumstances

Rain on your wedding day isn’t necessarily a sign of bad luck. Weather is just unpredictable that way. Have a tarp ready for this kind of occurrence. And if there’s just no saving it, you can get married in the living room or just postpone the wedding. That’s the perk of having a space that isn’t booked or in need of reservation.

Logistics and Accessibility

Ten people, one bathroom. One street corner, ten cars. These could be a problem. Plan for events like this beforehand. You can inform guests about the bathroom situation so they can ‘go’ before arriving at the venue. If there’s another bathroom upstairs, you can have someone escort them so they don’t get lost. And as for parking, you can suggest they carpool or come in an Uber or Lyft.

Also consider that parties are loud to an extent, which may bother the neighbors. You can secure a permit to avoid any trouble.

Keep it Fun and Casual

The biggest perk with a non-formal wedding is everyone can loosen up. Pets can run around, the ceremony doesn’t have to take forever, and you’re with an intimate group of people. Plus, you can still incorporate fun elements like having a DJ at the reception. They set the tone with their music and energy and help out with announcements. You can still have a magical dance together as a married couple, even if it’s in your own living room or backyard. A wedding is a wedding no matter where it’s held.

Another great thing about intimate weddings like this is you can cut on costs but still have great wedding photos. If you’re looking in the neighborhood for a great wedding photographer, then might I suggest you consider me! Check out my work and book me for a session now.
