North Carolina Elopement in the Mountains

Heather reached out to me in mid-June to talk about photographing their wedding later in the year in Michigan. She had mentioned that they were coming to North Carolina and Tennessee the next week, so I offered to do a family session for them while they were here. The next day, Heather called me and asked if they could switch their full wedding to an elopement while they were in the mountains. Of course, I said yes, and we went ahead with planning! I helped them plan their wedding and they chose a beautiful location just inside the North Carolina border at Max Patch.

The Magical Elopement

Hike the Appalachian Trail at Max Patch, one of North Carolina's most popular AT treks, atop a grassy, bald mountain covered in wildflowers. Catch a spectacular sunrise, sunset, or afternoon picnic on this two-mile loop with amazing 360-degree vistas and limitless sunshine. Max Patch offers an abundance of sunshine, breathtaking views, and the sensation of being on top of the world. It's encircled by seemingly endless mountains and set beneath massive skies. In a single word, it's incredible.

The top is a short trek from the Pisgah National Forest parking area. To reach the Appalachian Trail and top, take one of the two gentler blue blaze trails. For a total of 1.7 miles, hike up one trail, cross the peak, then return down the other. Atop the grassy bald, there are various pathways, several of which lead to excellent camping areas. At least 200 feet away from the major routes, set your camp. If you need to escape, it's helpful to have a few trees around. Even in the summer, the weather can change fast, with high winds and freezing nights.

It was just Connor, Heather, their three kids, and a good friend of theirs to sign as a witness. We hiked up the mountain to the clearing, where it was foggy and cloud-covered. By the time they changed clothes in the pop-up changing tent, the clouds had gone away and the beautiful view emerged. A rainbow came just as they completed changing and the clouds parted, allowing us to take a stunning family shot.

Soon after, the officiant arrived, and we found the perfect place for them to exchange vows. The rain came in quickly after they began exchanging vows, soaking us all. But, to be honest, it was a little magical! I adored how the couple got drenched while taking sweet, genuine photos. With their two young kids, who love to run about in the grass.

Max Patch is very popular, and it can get rather crowded at times. You will have more time to explore if you have your elopement on a weekday during the off-season. Otherwise, parking will be difficult and there will be a considerable crowd on the mountaintop. Although you are not required to obtain a permit to marry here at this time, be mindful of the natural settings. Enjoy it just as it is. It's a beautiful place to unwind and rest.

Max Patch is located on a winding forest service road. Always double-check that the roads are passable in your vehicle, especially in the winter.
Max Patch is a high-altitude mountain bald where temperatures are frequently 10-20 degrees lower than in Asheville. To avoid putting yourself and others in danger, check the weather conditions before driving to the region.
